Formative and past sexual experiences, i.e. first sexual intercourse, extramarital sex and forced sex, affect individuals throughout their lives. The effect of these experiences on adult sexual attitudes and behaviors has not been determined in previous research. An individual's first sexual experience is influenced by countless factors such as current age, race, religion, family structure, and social economic status while the experience of forced sex is not influenced by similar factors. In fact, the prediction of forced sex is difficult and the literature remains limited. It is the intent of this study to analyze beyond the factors leading up to formative sexual experience. Instead, formative sexual experiences will be viewed as predicting factors of past sexual behaviors and current sexual attitudes. Further, sexual differences between men and women will be discussed as well as the consistency between adult sexual attitudes and behaviors. The sample was derived from the 1992 National Health and Social Life Survey that consisted of a representative sample of the United States. Multiple regression and logistic regression were employed to determine statistical significance in the models.

The research found that the experience of formative sexual experiences has an effect upon adult sexual attitudes and behaviors. The experience of forced sex has a positive relationship with “liberal” sexual attitudes and behaviors while the conservative nature of first sexual experience continued with consideration of current sexual attitudes and behaviors. Participation in specific past sexual behaviors (teenage sex, premarital sex, homosexual sex, and extramarital sex) increases the likelihood of consistency between the past behavior and the current sexual attitude.
