This dissertation in the form of a Project Demonstrating Excellence is a two-part project including an exhibition of a suite of paintings and a Contextual Essay supporting the work. The essay is about the discovery of a painter. It is about the investigation and unfolding of the creative process, the reasoning that supports that process, and the choices one makes to achieve one's goals. The undertaking examines the development of nine paintings produced over a thirty-month period. Areas of investigation include the aesthetic and philosophic underpinnings of the work, including background information on palaeoanthropsychobiology (species-centrist) and feminism. In addition, semiotics, the symbol system of art, is discussed, with detailed information on the iconography of the work produced. As well, the subject of creativity is investigated, noting the ideology of Howard Gardner, David Feldman, and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Each of the three areas mentioned above is also discussed in relation to art education and cognitive development.

520 $a The exhibition of nine paintings was held at Good Goods Gallery in Saugatuck, Michigan, from November 16 through December 15, 2001. The individual paintings are cited in the Contextual Essay with regard to the formal organization of each work, the application of the elements of design and principles of composition, the semiotic markings applicable to each work, and the aesthetic stance behind each piece as well. A color photograph of each painting is included.
