An important dramatic singer, Marianna Barbieri-Nini's contributions to opera in the mid-nineteenth century had a profound influence on the development of the genre and its composers who wrote many works for her, including Giuseppe Verdi. He wrote one of his most dramatic characters, the role of Lady Macbeth, for Barbieri-Nini.

520 $a Because there are no substantial works on her, there are inconsistencies among the entries in dictionaries and encyclopedias concerning the general facts about her life. This study will clarify the conflicting information by examining the life of Barbieri-Nini and the industry in which she worked, and chronicling her career from 1838 to 1859. Several arias that she premiered at different times in her career will be analyzed to understand her vocal characteristics, maturation, and her ability to dramatically convey the character, a quality in which composers found ideal to be used for their operas.
