Thesis (Ph.D.)--New School for Social Research, 2002.
This dissertation examines the effectiveness of the traditional “old head”/young person mentoring relationship reported to be disappearing as a cultural tradition in inner-city black communities by a number of historians and social scientist. This study, based on ethnographic field work, proposes that scholars revise their understanding of mentoring in the Black community by looking to the spheres of art, culture, sports, and religion to find the continuance of the traditional old head young person relationship that has been so vital to the mainstream socialization of young men and women. This examination also explores how marginalized art survives and how the passing on of attitudes values and traditions through the application of the “old” head/younger person mentoring relationship assures the continued existence of an artistic tradition.
