The current study replicated prior research by Sanftner et al., (1995), which supported the role of shame as an important emotion in disordered eating symptomatology. The current study replicated prior research by Sanftner et al., (1995), which supported the role of shame as an important emotion in disordered eating symptomatology. In addition, it was extended to investigate the relationship between shame, guilt, and body image dissatisfaction to disordered eating symptomatology.

A correlational study design was employed. Three self-report measures assessed shame, guilt, body image dissatisfaction, and disordered eating symptomatology in ninety-one female undergraduate volunteers.

The current investigation successfully replicated the work of Sanftner et al., (1995). In addition, the results of the step-wise multiple regression analysis suggest that while body image dissatisfaction was the strongest predictor of disordered eating, shame in fact played an important role. The theoretical and clinical implications of this new emphasis on shame in relation to the other predictor variables for eating disorder behavior are discussed in this study.
