'Royalty' roses were grown in a greenhouse under different high intensity supplementary irradiation (HISI) regimes. The leaf water potential (Y
$\
sb{\rm w})
$
negatively correlated with quantum flux density (Q) as well as with transpiration rate (E) and stomatal conductance (g
$\
sb{\rm s}).
$
There was no midday reduction in E, g
$\
sb{\rm s}
$
or net photosynthetic rate (Pn). A reduction in Y
$\
sb{\rm w}
$
was observed at midday, except under low light conditions of 44-52

Pn increased linearly with E and g
$\

as a result of increased Q regardless of time of year, day and/or light regimes. The relationship between Pn and Q was quadratic, but almost linear up to a Q of 450-500

was observed on roses grown for extended periods under lower light intensities than roses grown under higher light during the year. A lag period of about 2-4 hrs was observed for Pn to reach a maximum and stable level after HISI came on at night.

Increases in Pn resulted in increased leaf total soluble carbohydrates (TSC) which was correlated highly with Q. The longer the photoperiod, the higher the TSC. Sucrose and sorbitol were most abundant and comprised 22-43% or 31-32% respectively of TSC depending on time of day, year and light regime.

Cut roses placed in full (FSF) or half (HSF) recommended strength Floralife solution showed leaf brittleness with negative Pn and unpleasant odor, but limited "bent neck" stems. While no brittle leaves or unpleasant odor occurred on roses placed in DW, several "bent neck" stems and higher Pn were observed on roses placed in DW.
