Thesis (M.S.F.)--Stephen F. Austin State University, 2003.
The Texas Master Naturalist program, initiated statewide in 1998, has trained over 1,500 volunteers in natural resource ecology, management, interpretation, and function. This study evaluated participants' (1) changes in knowledge and attitudes about ecological concepts, natural resource management, and consumptive uses of wildlife; (2) reasons for involvement in the program; and (3) demographics and activities completed after training. Beginning fall 2001, a survey of Master Naturalist volunteers (n = 228) was conducted using a quasi-experimental pre- and post-test design. Participants received a pre-test, post-test, and then a second post-test 8 months after training. Knowledge scores (percent correct) increased from 57.4 on the pre-test to 72.6 on the first post-test (P < 0.001) and 73.7 on the second post-test. Participants' attitudes became more pro-management following training. These and other results will provide the Texas Master Naturalist program sponsors with valuable information about the program volunteers and training strengths, weaknesses, and impact.Subjects--Topical Terms:
