Change in health care institutions is like a revolving door. No sooner is one change introduced than it is out-dated and something new is on the horizon. Executives must manage change or change will manage them. Leadership style, use of humor and the past experiences can have an effect on those who are impacted by constant changes.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Six executives within a three-hospital corporation in the Pacific Northwest were interviewed to determine if there is a relationship between leadership style, change and humor. Data were collected through interviews with each of the executives to find answers to specific research questions. Questions were centered around daily leadership style, changes in style during times of institutional change, what each of the executives thinks leadership means, as well as what change means. Finally, they were questioned about their use of humor and whether or not humor is utilized more in times of change. Questions about humor were asked of the executives' secretaries and their perceptions were compared with those of the executives.

From the data collected, the executives determined that there is not clear relationship between leadership style, change, and use of humor. The only change in style identified by the executives occurs when government mandated changes are being introduced within each of the three hospitals. No modification in leadership style is evident when created changes are introduced. All three factors, leadership style, change, and use of humor, have an influence on the overall functioning of the corporation. Decisions about organizational changes are communicated no differently than any other decision. All six executives believe that change is a reality that affects the organization. Five of the six believe that humor does have an impact on leadership success and all can identify when humor is inappropriate. Past experiences with change do affect decisions that are made by these six executives.
