Thesis (Ph.D.)--Stanford University, 1997.
This dissertation explores values and experiences in adolescent friendships. Based on Critical Incident interviews with a diverse group of 58 adolescents, ages 16-19, I address the following questions: What do adolescents value in their closest friendships? Are there common themes in what they value in these relationships? And, are there gender differences in what adolescents value in their closest friendships? The data show that trust, care, and respect are central to what adolescents value in their closest friendships. While there are commonly shared meanings of these concepts, there are also differences in what trust, care, and respect mean and how they are experienced by different groups of adolescents. Thus, this study points to the importance of understanding adolescent friendships in multiple contexts. The data strongly suggest, for example, that among the contexts that shape adolescent friendships, and what adolescents value in these relationships, are gender, class, and race/ethnicity. The findings also suggest that friendship is a rich moral domain that allows insight into dimensions of adolescents' moral lives not accounted for in traditional theory and research in moral education and moral development.

The dissertation is organized as follows: Chapter One provides an overview of the literature used to conceptualize and frame the study. Included in this chapter is a review of the relevant literature in feminist ethics and moral education, renewed interest in friendship in moral philosophy, and of the psychological research on adolescent friendship. Chapter Two describes the data collection and methods of analysis for this study. Chapter Three provides an overview of the research findings and the general themes and patterns that emerge from the data. This chapter focuses on commonly shared meanings of trust, care, and respect in adolescent friendships. Chapter Four focuses on gender differences in what adolescents value in their closest friendships. Chapter Five explores differences in meanings of trust, care, and respect between the economically disadvantaged, predominantly "minority" adolescents and the economically privileged, predominantly white adolescents in this study. Finally, Chapter Six concludes with a review of the major findings and implications for further research.
