Research on Psychological Sense of Community (PSOC) has proliferated as ways are sought to promote mental health. Although PSOC is theoretically comprised of four components (Membership, Influence, Fulfillment of Needs, and Shared Emotional Connection), existing measures of the components are psychometrically lacking. The current study sought to develop valid and reliable measures of the four theoretical components by building on items from existing PSOC measures, including the Sense of Community Index. Twenty-six items were administered to 349 gay and bisexual men living in a southwestern state. Data from a subsample of 100 participants were analyzed using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA). A four-factor model based on PSOC theory did not receive support in the EFA. Instead, results from the EFA indicated that items from the Fulfillment of Needs factor should be combined with Feelings of Belonging items from the Membership factor to form a three-factor model. Data from the remaining 249 participants were submitted to Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to test this three-factor model. In the CFA, the three-factor model with Influence, Shared Emotional Connection, and Fulfillment of Needs With Belonging Items achieved fair fit. Measures for these three PSOC components evidenced high reliabilities. Validity testing results supported the measures of Influence, Shared Emotional Connection, and Fulfillment of Needs. Support was also found for combining items from the three components into an overall measure of PSOC. This measure evidenced high reliability and predictive ability similar to that of the Sense of Community Index. Thus, this study offers reliable and valid measures for three theoretical components of PSOC. Suggestions for improvement on the measures are made and implications of the results for PSOC theory are discussed.
