Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Dominguez Hills, 2003.
The purpose of this research study was to ascertain if a group of eleven fifth grade African-American students who were Not Proficient or Partially Proficient in multiplication facts could acquire proficiency by listening to hip-hop music that contains the multiplication facts. This research study used a One Group Pretest/Posttest design to assess increases in student achievement. After the pretest, participants received twelve hours of a music intervention to ascertain if hip-hop music positively impacted multiplication achievement. An attitudinal survey was then administered during the last session to assess students' liking for music as a medium of instruction. The results of this study revealed that all but one participant improved in multiplication proficiency after being exposed to the music intervention. Eighty-two percent of the participants expressed that they enjoyed using hip-hop music to learn the multiplication facts.Subjects--Topical Terms:
