Thesis (M.L.A.)--University of Guelph (Canada), 2003.
This thesis is an investigation of a new design paradigm for the creation of alternative cemeteries that reflect twenty-first century North American society. Traditional rural, lawn-park, and memorial park cemeteries are unable to fulfil the needs of today's population. The continued use of traditional forms contributes to the marginalization of memory, as well as the environmental, sociological, and economic degradation of cemeteries. It is the contention of this thesis that a paradigm shift in cemetery design is necessary for twenty-first century North American culture. The methods of investigation include a review of cemetery history, an evaluation of current conditions, and an examination of precedent setting case studies. This thesis offers viable resolutions in written documentation and graphic illustration, through the creation of a landscape Masterplan for a new sacred space, which support the need for contemporary alternative cemeteries, and reframe North American cultural identity for the twenty-first century.
