Despite numerous calls by researchers and scholars in the field of counseling psychology, few attempts to examine the underlying elements of the career counseling process have been made. Additionally, there is a striking lack of direct empirical investigation of the false dichotomy hypothesis, or the idea that career and personal counseling are much of the same endeavor. Utilizing a systematic case study approach to process research, the purpose of this study was first to explore the ebb and flow of five general treatment components of counseling according to the Concurrent Model of Counseling Process (i.e., relationship building, assessment, goal setting, intervention, and termination) (Waehler & Lenox, 1994) in two complete career counseling cases. Secondly, this study explored the validity of the false dichotomy hypothesis by directly comparing the general treatment components found in the two career counseling cases to the treatment components found in two complete cases of personal counseling. The four counseling cases were obtained from an existing set of archived videotapes housed in a M.A.-Ph.D. counseling psychology training program at a large Midwestern university. Counseling sessions were coded by a trained rating team according to standard process research procedures found in the literature.Subjects--Topical Terms:

For both the career and personal counseling cases, the large majority of the counseling process was defined consistently by assessment and intervention type activities, and less so relationship building and goal setting. Attention to the process of termination in both career and personal counseling was practically non-existent. In the direct, empirical tests of the false dichotomy hypothesis, no significant differences between career and personal counseling were found either within individual counseling sessions or across counseling cases as a whole. Results begin to shed new light on what actually takes place at a basic process level over the course of career counseling. Additionally, the present study provides empirical support for the hypothesis that the processes of career and personal counseling are similar. These findings have important implications for career and personal counselors, counselor training programs, and counseling psychology process research.
