The University Player's Spring 2002 production Peer is playwright Howard Burman's ninety-minute adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's epic fantasy (six hours in length in its original uncut form) about a man's quest to find the answers to the mystery of life. The script's format closely resembles a screenplay and as such has an inherent filmic quality about it. Also, using songs and references from the Biker-film genre of the 1960s, Peer was steeped in the bluesy/jazz-rock-and-roll musical fusion unique to those films.Subjects--Topical Terms:

It was only natural then that the lighting design would follow suit. The lighting design approach to Peer was inspired by the combination of the cinematic structure of the script with its strong rock-and-roll underscores and phantasmagoric story. To underscore this style, constant isolation and movement of light was incorporated to mimic the film camera's own abilities to create similar imposing perspectives and dramatic moments, while broad atmospheres and cueing (not unlike Rock-and-roll concert cueing sequences) heightened the excitement and rhythm of the music, and hence the power of the drama.
