The purpose of this project report is to investigate class and social structure of 14th century England through fashion and how it relates to the costume design for Anthony Minghella's drama <italic>Two Planks and a Passion </italic>, staged at the Edison Theatre in 1999.

I chose to divide the characters in Minghella's play into three distinct social classes, the aristocracy, the merchant class and the peasants. I used social, political and economic elements of 14th century England to help define and delineate these three groups.

Minghella's play, set in 1392 England, takes place in York during the preparations for the yearly Passion Plays. King Richard and Queen Anne quickly become embroiled in the political intrigues of the various social classes staging the dramas.
