Thesis (M.A.)--San Jose State University, 2003.
This study is an investigation of the effect of architectural space and the environment on work performance, a topic of particular relevance to interior space designers. Previous research focused on the importance of windows in a working environment. This experiment simulated a workspace environment and manipulated a wall to suggest the existence of a window using stereoscopic visualization. A one-way ANOVA was used to assess differences in performance measured using the Figural Form of the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking and the Mental Rotation Test. Each participant (n = 44) performed both tests under one of four conditions: stereoscopic view of the three-dimensional window image, monoscopic view of the three-dimensional window image, a two-dimensional image of a calligraphic character or no image at all. Although participants in the “windowed” environment did not perform significantly better than participants who were in the “windowless” environment, the mean results indicate a marginal increase. Implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.Subjects--Topical Terms:
