The purpose of this study was to examine the endorsement of superstitions and rituals, their perceived effectiveness, and their relationship on actual sport performance with respect to gender and sport type. Athletes from six NCAA, Division I collegiate athletic teams completed the Superstitious Ritual Questionnaire (N = 88). A significant (p < .05) correlation was found between ‘Self-Ratings of Performance’ and ‘Prayer’ (r = .31). From the chi square analysis, no significance difference was found between males and females, however team sport athletes endorsed significantly (p > .05) more superstitious behaviors than individual sport athletes. A 2 x 2 MANOVA was analyzed to determine differences in perceived effectiveness of superstitions between gender and sport type. Significant differences in superstitious behaviors relating to ‘Clothing and Appearance’ (F = 11.26, p =.027), ‘Game/match’ (F = 27.84, p =.008), and ‘Prayer’ (F = 18.79, p =.045) were found. Personality traits of superstitious athletes should be assessed to examine what type of person is to likely use superstitions to facilitate performance.Subjects--Topical Terms:
