The graphic design industry, as well as the majority of other industries, has been plagued by challenges due to technological advancements. The twentieth century disciplines in early commercial art required masterful skill in order to produce aesthetically pleasing and effective design using, what graphic designers now consider, archaic instruments: rapidograph pens, T-squares, parallel bars, proportion wheels, haberules, transfer type, etc. When designers needed manuscript text (copy) “typeset,” they composed the text on a typewriter and specified instructions for it by hand. Artists handed over the specified text pages to professional typesetters who used processors, such as the Varityper, to produce camera-ready paper positives or film negatives for paste-up in mechanicals. Until the late 1980's, this practice was common, time consuming, and expensive.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Personal computers have now replaced the typesetter. The professional input and output of text have been sacrificed due to the computer, and designers still have much to learn regarding the proper rules for using digital type. This document will provide ample instruction for professional typesetting, and it will describe why professional typesetting should become the responsibility of every graphic designer.
