Thesis (M.E.Des.)--University of Calgary (Canada), 2002.
There are many more aspects to designing a recreational greenway than some first realize. Environmentally, greenways provide a wide range of benefits. Socially, recreational greenways provide a wide range of opportunities for park users—whether passive or active. Economically, recreational greenways are beginning to show how viable they can be as an alternative to the large traditional intensively maintained parks. This Master's Degree Project (MDP) case study researches the environmental, social, and economic benefits of greenways, park design trends that are conducive to use in a linear parks and applies these lessons to a section of land along Sumas Way in Abbotsford, British Columbia. The challenge for this greenway is the designing of as many environmental, social, and economic benefits into an extremely thin, fragmented and highly urbanized site.

In specific the design uses the basic guidelines of Naturescape British Columbia, advancements in nonpoint-source pollution treatment and control and particular parks and trail design trends to achieve environmental viability. Combined, these designs provide more than interpretive greenery. Instead what is created is what is termed ‘meaningful greenery’. Furthermore, connections have been maximized along the entire route of the trail. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
