This report provides an analysis of the costume design for the premier of “His Majesty Mr. Kean,” written by Charles Higham. It was produced by the California Repertory Company at California State University, Long Beach, in April and May of 1998. Since Edmund Kean was a historical figure, the costume design was examined within the historical and social context of the period in which he lived. Focusing specifically on how the social hierarchy of the period was represented within the play, this study was an analysis of the elements used to symbolize social status, demonstrating how the costume design reflected the social mobility of the central character, Edmund Kean.Subjects--Topical Terms:
