Italian coral beads as dress are the focus of this study, which examines the construction and cross-cultural exchange of value and preciousness. I document the coral bead industry in Torre del Greco, Italy's leading global exporter of coral beads and jewelry. Within an interpretive, material culture studies perspective, I used ethnographic fieldwork, in-depth interviews, photographic documentation, and methods of history to describe bead production, trade, and factors of value. I created an analytical framework of value which includes (1) intrinsic or inherent value, based upon the object and materials from which it is made, (2) market or commodity value, based on a system or process of exchange and commoditization, (3) associative value, based on the meanings and significance that become embedded through social and cultural processes, and (4) negotiated exchange value, based on the interaction of the entire spectrum of value factors above. A case study analyzing coral beads worn by the Kalabari Ijo ethnic group of Nigeria illustrates this type of value.

This study provides an understanding of the real costs in raw materials, labor time, quality control, and levels of production in a highly valued global commodity. The movement of coral beads, throughout their life, in time, space, and through varied contexts of production, trade, and use offers engagement with complex networks, relationships, and varied players. Within a framework of value, coral beads encompass a diversity of forms, meanings, and significance that can be compared and contrasted cross-culturally as a multi-faceted interplay between local and global. We can understand how value and meaning reside not only in practices that frame the object but also in the object itself and in the material from which it is made. Emphasizing elements of strategy, self-interest, and calculation common to commodity exchanges from both production and consumer contexts highlights the interactive nature of these transactions as negotiation. A transnational lens on value frames commodities like coral beads as cultural discourse, allowing a fuller understanding of the mobility and movement of cultural and consumer meaning and the interconnections of economic and cultural systems inherent to fashion and dress.
