Thesis (M.A.)--Texas Woman's University, 1992.
Previous research concerning spouse selection has focused primarily on conscious personality and social factors. Some researchers have even examined how an individual's unconscious desires or conflicts may influence mate selection. Family systems theorists have postulated that one's family of origin may play a role in mate selection, that one unconsciously chooses a mate at the same or similar level of functionality or health. Additionally, family health has been measured in terms of levels of disengagement and enmeshment. This study used the Family of Origin Scale and the Revised Colorado Self-Report Measure of Family Functioning to examine the relationship between couples' spouse selection and degree of health in their families of origin. One hundred three couples completed the two instruments. It was found that: (1) individuals tend to select a mate from a family of origin with a similar degree of family of origin health, and (2) individuals from families of origin emphasizing enmeshment tend to choose spouses from families of origin high in disengagement, and vice versa.Subjects--Topical Terms:
