The key leadership positions in hierarchical organizations call for leaders who combine both the characteristics of a leader, the inspirational agent of change, with the ability to manage the complexities and routine of the day-to-day operations of the business. The success of leaders in this position depends not only on their ability to perform the job at hand, but also on their motivation to occupy a leadership position with these characteristics. In understanding the motivation to lead in hierarchical organizations, it becomes important to distinguish between the indicators of the presence of such motivation and expressions of personality and general cognitive ability. This study examined the influences of general cognitive ability, personality, and sex on the motivation to lead. The relationships were explored through regression modeling and confirmatory factor analysis. A strong relationship between personality and the motivation to lead was found.Subjects--Topical Terms:
