Women's history in medieval Hungary has generally been restricted to legal issues and the upper levels of society. This study attempts to address these deficiencies by examining women in the Register of Várad in regard to three main areas of investigation: marriage, the acquisition and use of property, and women's access to power and authority.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Evidence from the register indicates that by the thirteenth century marriage practices still relied heavily on family arrangements rather than consent. The role of the Church was slowly being felt as seen in the increasing role of priests in the wedding itself. Women in Hungary obtained property mainly through a dower and the inheritance of one-fourth of their patrimony. This inheritance was an absolute right. Husbands had the rights to their wives' dower and inheritance. Widows serving as wards for minor sons could attain positions as feudal lords possessing significant amounts of authority.
