This thesis offers a comparative/historical examination of sex trafficking in the Philippines and Russia. In an era of corporate-dominated globalization, the polarization of wealth has led to the proliferation of sex trafficking. By examining two different societies with unique histories, the common social forces that contribute to the development and continuing pattern of sex trafficking are identified. In particular, this thesis examines the negative effects of the policies and practices of transnational corporations, the structural adjustment programs of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, and the “free trade” practices of the World Trade Organization on the economies of the Philippines and Russia. This thesis demonstrates how these policies and practices contribute to the proliferation of sex trafficking. In conclusion, an examination of the solutions proffered at both the governmental and grassroots levels to combat sex trafficking and corporate-dominated globalization is offered.Subjects--Topical Terms:
