In this case study, I examined Paul Volcker's policies during his Federal Reserve Bank chairmanship during one of America's worst economic crises in its history. Paul Volcker, in the view of the writer, saved this country from inflation and helped bring the U.S. to where it is today. His creative and aggressive actions probably helped President Reagan win his re-election campaign and laid the groundwork for this country's highest economic growth since the end of the Second World War.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Conversely, critics of Volcker claim that his actions created the second worst recession since the Great Depression. They argue that his lack of economic sensitivity raised unemployment to double-digit figures, slowed economic growth and created social anxiety over the future of the U.S.

While the concerns of Mr. Volcker's critics are not without merit, the severity of the country's economic problems required actions that were bound to be painful in the short run. These policies apparently helped in the longer run.
