Thesis (M.A.)--Truman State University, 2003.
During the time of Margery Kempe in early fifteenth-century England, woman was defined by her sexuality, which was seen as a destructive and threatening force that needed to be contained. That containment came in many forms, not least of which was the institution of medieval marriage, which silenced woman by placing her, legally and physically, under the jurisdiction of her husband. In The Book of Margery Kempe, Margery pushes against the containment of her secular marriage by using her faith and the legal language of contract to regain access to both her voice and her body. She uses her faith to free herself from the boundaries imposed on her as a woman by society. She renegotiates her marriage contract with her husband John, freeing herself from the sexual contract of marriage, and then contracts a new marriage agreement with Christ, who appears to her in vivid and erotic visions.Subjects--Topical Terms:
