The Versailles Conference which concluded World War I was a complex affair. Central to the proceedings was the interaction between the visionary, progressive American President Woodrow Wilson, and the traditional, reactionary, Premier of France George Clemenceau. Wilson had come to the conference bent of fulfilling his pledge of a “new world order” based on international cooperation and selfless diplomacy. His chief rival, George Clemenceau, was committed to the techniques of “old world diplomacy” that had guided Europe for centuries and was adamant in his nationalistic goals of security and reparation for France. These leaders came into conflict at Versailles, and through much maneuvering and difficult diplomacy were eventually able to come to terms.Subjects--Topical Terms:
