Thesis (M.Eng.)--Carleton University (Canada), 2004.
Multinational corporations have been actively forming R&D alliances with Chinese organizations for the last decade. The objective of this thesis is to explore the connections between the forms of these alliances, their function (i.e., the R&D activities undertaken) and the declared motives of the participants. Particular attention is paid to the significant changes in Chinese public policy with respect to international R&D alliances during the study period. A sample of 80 international R&D alliances between multinational corporations and Chinese organizations (both public and private) in the information technology (including telecommunications) industry in China formed during the period from 1997 to 2003 is used in the research. Hypotheses derived from theories of resource dependency, transaction costs, and strategic choice, are tested and the results show that the motives of multinational corporations are significantly associated with the choice of forms and R&D activities.
