Thesis (M.A.)--Carleton University (Canada), 1998.
This thesis examines the forms of knowing, technologies of power, institutions, social practices, and strategies pursued by a range of social agents, to show how they are implicated in the processes which transform the reproductive capacities of living organisms into an object that can be legally appropriated. These processes are treated as a form of governance to capture how the legal appropriation of life is accomplished through distinctive ensembles of social relations, forms of knowledge, regulatory agents, modes of moral regulation, and a profusion of shifting alliances between humans and non-human actants. The thesis examines patents regimes as a technology of power, the discourses and practices of molecular biology, the constitution of biotechnology as an object of regulatory knowledge, and lastly, reforms to Canada's patent regime. The legal approiation of life is demonstrated to be the result of the intersection of these diverse processes.
