Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Kentucky, 1998.
It is widely claimed by a number of business and academic gurus that in order for the organizations to have a lasting competitive advantage, they will have to be knowledge driven. If knowledge is viewed as a resource that is critical to an organization's survival and success in the global market, then like any other resource it demands good management. However, most organizations still have not approached knowledge management (KM) activity formally or deliberately. The cause for this lack of effective management of knowledge could be that many organizations are still struggling to comprehend the KM concept. To ease the struggle, the fundamental issue of identifying salient characteristics of KM phenomena needs to be addressed. The objective of this dissertation is to help address this need by using empirical methods to develop a framework that identifies and characterizes the main elements of KM phenomena and their relationships.

Organized, systematic progress of KM as a field of study and practice can benefit from frameworks such as the one introduced here. Specifically, the framework introduced here aims to build a unified view of KM phenomena, help researchers study the area of KM in an organized fashion, allow practitioners to understand KM, and provide groundwork for KM curriculum development. Moreover, this framework is intended to stimulate further development in the KM field.

The methodology used to perform the research has four phases, including both empirical and conceptual elements. Following the initial preparatory phase, the second and the third phases focus on framework development, and the fourth phase focuses on examining the framework's utility (e.g., applicability, functionality). In the initial phase the framework boundary is defined and a set of standards for evaluating the framework is identified. In phase two, an initial framework is developed by synthesizing current research from multiple disciplines plus current business practices that affect KM. In the third phase, the initial framework is critiqued, modified, and refined by employing a Delphi method. The Delphi study involves an international panel of KM experts from industry and academia. This leads to the final framework presented in this dissertation. In the fourth phase, the utility of this final framework is explored and demonstrated.
