The effects of heat stress on simple mental performance have been studied and well documented. On the contrary, much remains to be discovered regarding the effects of hot environments on time-sharing performance. The latter becomes especially important with the increasing complexity of contemporary industrial settings.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The objectives of the present research were (1) to test whether certain cognitive resources are more sensitive to heat stress effects than others in time-sharing situations, (2) to determine whether different levels of relative humidity yielding the same value of the WBGT index differentially impact time-sharing performance, and (3) to test whether the most recent NIOSH (1986) recommended heat stress standard, although based solely on physiological criteria, protects time-sharing performance as well.

Twelve unacclimatized subjects were exposed for two hours in an environmental chamber to three WBGT temperatures (22

With respect to dual-task performance, working memory tasks (mathematical processing and memory search) were more resistant to heat stress effects than the psychomotor (unstable tracking) and visual perceptual input (display monitoring) tasks. Overall SYNTASK performance (measured via a composite score) was not impaired in the heat. However, visual monitoring and auditory discrimination performance declined significantly at 34
