This study examined critical thinking skills of associate degree student nurses from three different nursing programs, Schools A, B, and C that utilized the California Critical Thinking Skills Test as a program assessment tool. Results indicated some degree of improvement in scores from the three programs when comparing scores from beginning to end of each program. However, School C results reflected a significant difference (p < .05) in increase of critical thinking skills. In addition, a survey was sent to students and faculty in an attempt to identify instructional methodologies that may have enhanced critical thinking skills in students. Survey responses indicated that faculty and students perceived that a variety of active learning activities may have assisted students in developing critical thinking skills. Faculty noted that instructional methods which promote analytical thinking effectively in students were: Concept Maps, Case Studies, and Nursing Care Plans. School C faculty specified consistent use of these strategies which could account for the positive results in critical thinking ability of students in that school.
