Female choice is an important aspect in the study of sexual selection. Some males possess certain characteristics, such as ornaments, food, or territory, to attract females. The sizes of chelae are shown to play an important role in the reproductive success of male crayfish. The presence of both chelipeds and the presence of burrows are also important characteristics that females choose. In this study, Procambarus simulans was tested to see if females preferred males with larger chelae, larger cephalothorax sizes, one versus two chelipeds, and males containing burrows. For each experiment, two males that differed depending on the characteristic being tested were tethered on opposite sides of ten-gallon tanks. Results show that females significantly preferred males with larger chelae size but not males with larger cephalothorax size. Females also did not show a preference for males that had one versus two chelipeds, and females significantly avoided males that contained burrows.
