Thesis (Ph.D.)--Kent State University, 2004.
Twentieth-century criticism of fantasy has concentrated on the structural components of the genre. This approach has led to an understanding of how structure works to create story. It allows clearer comparisons to be made among fantasy works in the areas of plot, character development, setting, structure, ideas and other technical areas of composition. The structural approach, however, tends to de-emphasize discussion of the supernatural and its influence on fantasy. Man's belief in the supernatural, or his disbelief, is also ignored.

This one-sided approach leads to an incomplete definition of fantasy. The purpose of this work is to offer a reading of modern fantasy that focuses attention on the spiritual essence of fantasy, instead of the structural components. The heart of fantasy is a matter of belief, and it depends on whether man chooses to believe in God or man. If one believes in God as the supernatural ordering force of the universe, my work labels this attitude "connected". If one believes in man alone in a universe without a supernatural presence, the label I use in this work is "disconnected".

In chapter one the attitude of feeling "connected" is seen primarily in the works of George MacDonald, Arthur Machen, and C. S. Lewis. Myth is recognized as an effective tool for creating this "connected" attitude. Chapter two develops the "disconnected" attitude by discussing elements of Norse mythology, Milton's Paradise Lost, and works by H. G. Wells, H. P. Lovecraft, and others. Chapter three studies Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast trilogy and concludes that Peake adopted an existentialist, "disconnected" attitude in his work. Chapter four points out that Stephen Donaldson wrote "disconnected" fantasy in his first Thomas Covenant trilogy, but reversed his stance to write "connected" fantasy in the second Covenant trilogy. Chapter five states that Tolkien combined both attitudes, thereby making his work attractive and relevant to many readers of diverse beliefs.
