Thesis (M.A.V.A.)--Lamar University - Beaumont, 2004.
Architectural forms create spaces relevant to human experience. They may perform an archival function, preserving memory and engaging the past and present to convey values and to provide historical continuity to future generations. This thesis presents an architectural form, an art object, as a visible expression of the cultural memory, history and abstract values of a twentieth-century community that grew in conjunction with the development of petrochemical industries.

The architectural structure conceived for this thesis is an art object that corresponds to the history of human experience in the particular environment of Southeast Texas communities. The design consists of a tower, 60 feet tall, rising from within the ruined corner of a building. It was inspired by a local landmark, the office buildings and dormitories that stood for nearly a century at the Neches River docks formerly owned and operated by Texaco, Inc. It is proposed as a structure in which the spaces created refer to the past, to loss and changes that occur with passing time, and to the progress of time through the present and into the future. Symbolic of passing time and passing lives, it will be a means of making the unseen visible and the absent always present.

One purpose of creating architectural forms, other than for shelter, is to make a place conspicuous and cause it to become a site for continuing, meaningful human interaction. This is the larger goal of this thesis project. A design process and product will result in a proposal for public art that may later be realized as a monument memorializing corporate and blue collar refinery workers, their families, and their communities.
