Thesis (Ed.Sp.)--Central Missouri State University, 2004.
This study used a self-administered, mailed survey instrument to assess the current state of accessibility for students with vision, hearing, or physical impairments in Missouri rural elementary library media centers. The survey instrument was sent to 482 rural Missouri school districts that serve students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Questions concerning accommodations in accessing library facilities, materials, and services as well as providing assistive technologies were included. The results and conclusions demonstrate the need for more disability-specific training for library media specialist and staff; a greater awareness of the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990; clear wording in self-administered surveys; and further research in urban areas and other grade levels.
