The problem this thesis addresses is that the Universal Islamic Declaration of Human Rights (UIDHR), 1981, contains restrictions on religious freedom. The objectives are, first, to illustrate the problem of restrictions on religious freedom found in the UIDHR, 1981, through the methodology of providing historical examples, comparing the UIDHR, 1981, to the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), and by providing current examples of restrictions on religious freedom, and, second, to provide U.S. policy recommendations that address restrictions on religious freedom.

520 $a This thesis illustrates that inherent discrimination within Shari'a (Islamic jurisprudence) against non-Muslims has restricted their religious freedom and placed limitations on their civil and political rights. It is recommended that the United States Federal Government take a proactive role in aiding moderate Muslims to reinterpret Shari'a so that it complies with UDHR, 1948, standards of religious freedom.
