Most inattentional blindness research assesses attention and visual awareness using scenes filled with multiple objects. Direct studies of attention and visual awareness using a single object are rare. In this project, unexpected events (changes to luminance and color) are shown within or outside a single, complex, three-dimensional and rotating object. The goal of the project was to examine attentional effects within versus between objects, while manipulating distinctiveness of the unexpected change and similarity of the unexpected change to the target change. While observers were focusing on one part of an object, a change to another part of the object needed to be particularly distinctive to be seen. The results support theories that say that onsets in empty locations draw attention and that a large luminosity change to an existing object can update the object into new, and thus also draw attention. The results seem inconsistent with theories saying that only unexpected changes similar to the target change will be noticed. The results are discussed in terms of meaningfulness of the events and the need to maintain object constancy in dynamic displays.
