Anchoring theory (Gilchrist et al., 1999) accurately predicts the lightness values of black, gray and white surfaces under a single illumination level. Moreover, anchoring theory can account for errors that the visual system generates in certain displays and is therefore very successful in explaining a number of well-known lightness illusions. When the surface of an object extends through two different illumination levels, anchoring theory can account for matches made to each of the two regions (patches) of the object. However, the observers can not only provide separate matches for the patches, but can also provide a single lightness value for the entire object. Anchoring theory cannot account for the lightness of the whole object under these conditions. The main objective of this research was to determine the relationship between lightness matches made to the object and matches made to the patches. Either a spotlight, or a shadow or both were cast across a series of five adjacent rectangles (spanning the range from black to white). The results show that the object match represents a compromise between the match for the patch in the highest field of illumination and the patch in the largest field of illumination. The two principles are parallel to those found for anchoring lightness. Lightness is anchored by the highest luminance and the luminance with the largest area.
