Thesis (M.P.H.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2004.
Overweight and obesity has become the fastest growing epidemic affecting American children and adolescents today. Since lifelong nutrition and activity patterns are established during childhood, health risk screening during this time period is crucial to the development of healthy habits. However, many barriers existed among Connecticut School-Based Health Centers (CT SBHCs) that impede adequate levels of overweight and obesity management practices. Therefore, the results imply the need for increased SBHC funds, better patient education materials, additional training skills for patient interest and compliance, and more time to perform the services. This study reveals obesity management practices are being employed throughout Connecticut School-Based Health Centers (CT SBHCs), but more students could be identified, screened, and treated if the barriers and obstacles were subsided.
