Contemporary time-accumulation models make the unique prediction that acquisition of a conditioned response will be equally rapid with partial and continuous reinforcement, if the time between conditioned stimuli is held constant and learning is assessed over reinforcers and not trials. To investigate this, acquisition of conditioned responding was examined in 4 experiments. Experiments 1--3 used a rat magazine approach procedure and several different testing procedures. Experiment 4 used a pigeon autoshaping procedure in order to reassess previous results. Contrary to prediction, evidence for slowed acquisition in partially reinforced animals was observed in all experiments with several response measures. The results of Experiment 4 suggest that previous results supportive of the prediction may have been due to the use of a criterial response measure in which partially reinforced animals have more opportunities to reach criterion than continuously reinforced animals as well as the use of a procedure that leads to superior asymptotic responding with partial rather than continuous reinforcement. Current results, along with a reanalysis of the relevant literature, point to inferior acquisition of conditioned responding with partial rather than continuous reinforcement. Results generally support associative rather than time-accumulation accounts of conditioning.
