This study further investigated whether there was a significant relationship between the leadership patterns and behaviors of female chief executive officers and other factors such as the experience of the CEO, the educational level of the CEO, the race/ethnicity of the CEO, the size of the institution's student population, and the race/ethnicity of the student population.

Specifically, the participants included female community college presidents whose colleges were members of the American Association of Community Colleges. The participants were asked to rate 30 items on a ten-point scale on the five patterns of actions identified by the Leadership Practices Inventory by Kouzes and Posner, 2003. The five patterns of actions identified by the LPI included: Challenging the Process, Inspiring a Shared Vision, Enabling Others to Act, Modeling the Way and Encouraging the Heart. Participants were also asked to fill out a data informant supplement, which was developed by the researcher.

Descriptive and analytical statistics were used to answer the research questions. Analysis of the variance (ANOVA) and Pearson product moment correlations were used to analyze the data. One hundred twenty-six of 175 CEOs responded with a response rate of 72 percent. As reported by female community college presidents, the results of this study indicated that there were no significant differences between rural, suburban, urban, and inner city presidents and the five leadership patterns. The results indicated that female community college presidents differed in their leadership patterns according to educational level, race/ethnicity, and experience. Findings also indicated that there were significant differences between leadership patterns and the percentage of full-time students enrolled.

Recommendations for future research included: studies of female community college CEOs using the LPI-Self and the LPI-Observer, qualitative studies with female community college CEOs who have higher years of experience and plan to retire within the next five years, qualitative studies conducted with minority, female community college CEOs, and a replication of this study as the percentage of female community college presidents increases.
