Martin Heidegger's thoughts on historical understanding have largely been neglected in studies of his work. The present dissertation grapples with his notion of historical understanding, placing it in the context of his early writings up to and including his masterwork Being and Time (1927).Subjects--Topical Terms:

Heidegger's reflections on historical understanding called into question a wide range of ideas on this topic that arose in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In books and lectures of the 1920s his critique touched on philosophies of history--above all of Hegel--as well as on major historians and originators of modern historiographical theory like Leopold von Ranke; the brunt of his attack was directed, however, against critical theories of history which, in diverse ways, sought to establish the principles and limits of historical reasoning. Such theories were elaborated in the works of thinkers like Wilhelm Windelband, Heinrich Rickert, Wilhelm Dilthey, Georg Simmel, and Ernst Troeltsch.

It is of special importance for this investigation that Heidegger's attack arose in a period when previous historical methods of understanding were subjected to widespread rebuke in the German universities. While seeking to comprehend Heidegger's own conception of historical understanding, the present dissertation also takes his thought as a prism through which the theme of historical reflection in Germany may be refracted. The attempt is made to comprehend the emergence of Heidegger's historical ontology in relation to a widely perceived predicament of historical understanding in his times.
