Thesis (M.P.H.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2002.
Currently, children and adolescents with asthma may choose to engage in physical activities less than children and adolescents without asthma, due to the risk that exercise may worsen symptoms or trigger an asthma attack. Public middle school children of Fairfield, Connecticut, were surveyed about their current exercise habits including the (a) frequency, (b) intensity, and (c) frequency of exercise restriction by respiratory symptoms. Both subjects with and without asthma reported the same frequency for vigorous exercise (mean 4 days/week) and nearly the same frequency for moderate exercise (mean 2.45 and 3.18 days/week, respectively). Subjects with asthma reported two or more times the restriction of exercise from shortness of breath and wheezing than did the subjects without asthma.
