Thesis (M.L.A.)--The University of North Carolina at Asheville, 2004.
The relevance and realism of the U.S. embargo on Cuba, punctuated by the case study of a North Carolina farmer, underscore the enormous implications of sanctions and crystallize the juxtaposition of the Cold War mindset, domestic politics and the new rules comprising globalization. Evidence suggests the embargo will be lifted as a direct result of globalization and that agribusiness will comprise an impetus of power for relegating the sanctions to the archives. Farmer Allan Henderson, whose grass-roots effort is market access and not the toppling of Communism, is Western North Carolina's sole agribusiness leader pioneering trade with Fidel Castro's Cuba. This thesis includes key legislation, particularly the Trade Sanctions Reform and Export Enhancement Act of 2000, affecting U.S.-Cuba trade relations since 1992. In the broader sense, there is evidence that the forces of globalization are so strong that they bypass the state as the dominant influence on human behavior and transcend the traditional components of international politics.
