Thesis (Ph.D.)--Columbia University, 2004.
This thesis responds to the following two sets of questions: (1) what is the picaresque?---is it a genre? a formal path of enunciation? a myth? a paradigm?---what does it consist of---is it only a group of literary formulas? a certain style? a particular structure? a type of language? And (2) what are the reasons that explain the rebirth of the picaresque in 20th century postwar Europe?

First, the dissertation develops a theoretical model based on the picaresque formal path of enunciation. This concept offers an overarching framework under which the numerous picaresque descendants are subsumed. Secondly, it explores the neopicaresque genre, and the relationship between 20th century postwar historical circumstances and the contemporary artistic expression. In part, thanks to the findings of this study, the picaresque phenomenon will be detected, classified and understood more easily in the future.
