This research essay consists of three major components. The first is a summary of the well documented chronology of historical revisionism during the years of "glasnost" in the Soviet Union (1985-1989). Emphasis is placed on movements within the historical and literary professions which culminated in government and Party reassessments of the Soviet past and the rehabilitations of various personalities who had for decades been cast in the role of traitors to socialism and the Soviet state. The second part of the paper examines the revision of Soviet high school textbooks which occurred primarily as a result of the above reassessment and rehabilitation. The thoroughly revisionist tenth grade history text published in 1989 (History of the U.S.S.R., (1900-1941)) is contrasted with texts which preceded it (published between the years 1957-1987). Two topics are examined in detail: the transition from NEP to mass collectivization (1928-1929), with emphasis placed on the treatment of the so-called 'Bukharin group', and Soviet involvement in the Spanish Civil War. The conclusion is reached that textbook revision was just as much--if not more--a result of the atmosphere of 'political correctness' which had grown up around glasnost and perestroika as it was the product of sincere research and interpretation by the historical community of previously unavailable source materials. The final portion of the research essay is an examination of the portions of the ninth and tenth grade global studies syllabus of New York State that relate to the two topics examined above, and an evaluation of the treatment of these events in textbooks used in New York State social studies classrooms (texts with similar publication dates to their Soviet couterparts). Accompanying this discussion is the author's suggestions as to how both the syllabus and the texts could be best revised to reflect the Soviet revisionism which has given a new perspective to much of Soviet history.Subjects--Topical Terms:
