This doctoral project examines community college students' leadership development. As these students typically represent the "everyday" people within our communities, the focus was on how leadership is developed and used by those who may not recognize and appreciate their own leadership skill and ability.

The first literature review examined the concepts of leader and leadership development. The factors that may influence one's leadership development are complex because of the many and varied combinations of individual personality, cultural experiences, gender differences, opportunities, and "life's negative gifts" (among other factors) which can determine a person's particular leadership strengths and weaknesses. The characteristics of community college students were identified. Often termed "non-traditional," these students are diverse in terms of age, socio-economic levels, language, race/ethnicity, physical ability, career and educational aspirations, and life experiences, as well as a number of other factors. In addition, the literature review explored leadership in the context of values, empowerment, vision, followership, and powerlessness, and took a closer look at multicultural, transformational, situational, transactional, and servant leadership models.

A second literature review focused on four contexts in which leadership occurred: the family, education, community and social action, and business. Included in the second review was information on how leadership development can occur in these contexts in a variety of forms and on a number of levels. Some of the areas discussed were leadership development in family situations, how leadership is influenced by community and social activism, how individual and corporate values affect leadership development, and how parents influence leadership within the educational system.

Finally, a textbook was developed which focused on introducing community college students to general leadership theory, practice, and skills. The textbook also assisted students in recognizing and strengthening their own leadership skill and ability in the four contexts mentioned above. Each chapter of the text (part of the dissertation project) included discussion questions, activities, assignments, and/or case studies.
