The purpose of this study was to provide a comparative evaluation of all trumpet studies listed in the 1993 Brass Player's Guide, published by Robert King. This publication lists trumpet materials of all publishers. The studies were categorized using a revised version of the system found in The Trumpet Teacher's Guide by Mathie (1984). The procedures for evaluating textbooks given in Gall's Handbook for Evaluating and Selecting Curriculum Materials were adapted for the evaluation process.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a The evaluation design was based upon value questions with special attention given to current educational evaluation standards. The worth of physical and instructional properties of each study was measured by subjecting each to a comprehensive list of questions created to address basic elements of technique or musicianship. Each study was sorted according to content and again by ability level. Therefore, ratings were compared within each category and studies were selected for a recommended group of practice materials.
520 $a From this study it was concluded that no trumpet instructional materials could be said to be indispensable to all students. Materials chosen for a student must be appropriate for that student, and in the end it will be the student's talent, dedication, and perseverance that will determine his or her success. This study, however, will help the student and teacher determine the strengths, weaknesses and appropriateness of all pedagogical publications for trumpet.
